HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
MIQOT: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman is among Indonesia's oldest academic journals dedicated to Islamic Studies, under the auspices of Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (the State Islamic University of North Sumatra). It began informally in 1973, the university's inaugural year, and received formal recognition in 1976 from the Department of Information of the Republic of Indonesia. Over its 50-year history, MIQOT has adopted three variations of its title: MIQOT: Majalah Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Pembangunan, MIQOT: Majalah Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Kemasyarakatan, and finally MIQOT: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman. These changes reflect its dedication to progress and the evolution of Islamic Studies.
In its early years, MIQOT served a dual role, publishing scholarly articles and providing updates on university activities to inform staff, students, and the public about institutional milestones. It occasionally included congratulatory messages and advertisements. However, by the late 1990s, MIQOT shifted its focus exclusively to academic studies in Islamic Studies, transitioning from bi-monthly to bi-annual publication and refining its editorial processes, manuscript reviews, and overall management.
Entering the 21st century, MIQOT demonstrated its adaptability and commitment to excellence in journal management. After maintaining Sinta-2 accreditation from the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education for two decades, it achieved a significant milestone in 2024 by being included in Scopus index, elevating its standing in the academic world. The journal continues to aim for improved management, more focused Islamic Studies topics, and enhanced editorial rigor.
MIQOT operates under the philosophy that Islam, as a divine gift, offers values, rules, and guidance for humanity. It is humanity's duty to interpret and implement these principles, contributing to the dynamic history of Muslim culture, which remains a fertile ground for scholarly exploration. MIQOT is committed to publishing the results of such studies to promote mutual learning and understanding. It is important to note that the views expressed in its articles are solely those of the authors and not the editors. (See: video History of MIQOT: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman).
