THE SURYALAYA PARADIGM: A Mixed-Methods Study on Integrating Sufi Pedagogy for Holistic Islamic Community Empowerment

Abstract


This study examines how the Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TQN) at Pesantren Suryalaya integrates Sufi pedagogy to drive holistic Islamic Community Empowerment (PMI). Employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, quantitative data were collected via a survey of 330 TQN members. Qualitative data were systematically gathered through semi-structured interviews with 32 key informants, participant observation, and document analysis. Quantitative results reveal a robust pattern of spiritual-pedagogical adherence (84.6%) and significant consequential involvement in socio-economic empowerment (72.8%). Qualitative findings show that this integration operates through three core mechanisms: the Mursyid serves as a translational authority, converting spiritual legitimacy into social resources; ritual practices like dzikr function as embedded developmental infrastructure that generates ethical social capital; and institutional hybridity (e.g., BMT cooperatives) merges spiritual ethics with economic functions. In conclusion, the Suryalaya paradigm demonstrates that the systematic integration of Sufi teachings cultivates strong moral and social capital, providing a culturally resonant, faith-anchored model for sustainable community development.
