QURBANI AS SOCIAL REDISTRIBUTION: Class Boundary Negotiation and Solidarity in South Sulawesi
Abstract
Traditional scholarship often focuses on dogmatic theology or nutritional outcomes of sacrifice, leaving a gap in understanding religious rituals as active social mechanisms for class negotiation. As such, this study is an attempt to examine Qurbani (sacrifice) as a non-state redistributive practice in South Sulawesi. Integrating Islamic Studies with sociological analysis, This research explores how this ritual facilitates situational solidarity within contemporary stratified societies by integrating Islamic Studies with sociological analysis. A multi-site qualitative case study was employed; data were collected through participant observation of slaughtering and meat distribution, in-depth interviews with donors, committee members, and recipients, and community document analysis across urban, semi-urban, and rural areas. The findings demonstrate that sacrifice functions as a ‘redistributive ritual’ embedded in Maqâshid al-Syarî‘ah principles, where the transfer of material resources temporarily softens symbolic class boundaries and promotes social justice. The novelty of this study lies in its articulation of ‘negotiated solidarity’—a situational corrective for social fragmentation. However, increasing digitalization reveals an ambivalence, where technocratic efficiency risks depersonalizing the relational encounters vital for social cohesion. This article contributes a new theoretical framework by positioning ritualized redistribution as a key mechanism for managing inequality in contemporary Muslim societies.
