MENCIPTAKAN MUSLIM MODERN: Relasi Kuasa Islam dan Negara Indonesia Modern

Mohamad Hudaeri

Abstract

Abstract: Shaping Modern Muslim: The Relation of Islamic Authority and Modern Indonesian State. Understanding the Islamic reform movement in modern era can not be separated from its relation with nation-state power. This paper seeks to analyze Islamic articulation in modern-day Indonesia which seeks to emerge from the dichotomy between secular-modern and traditional-religion. The author argues that the purpose of the neo-modernism renewal movement is not only to reconstruct the question of 'how' to understand Islam, but also to imply 'who' the modern Muslim is. The first relates to the need for reconstruction of Islamic orthodoxy, while the latter deals with the mentality of Muslims in this modern era. The need for the reconstruction of these two things is related to the modern state power system which is different from the power system applied in pre-modern society. This paper explains the thinking of Islamic reformers in Indonesia which implies the construction of modern Muslim subjects and their relation to the modern state power system.
