COLLECTIVE MEMORY, SUFISM, AND ISLAMIC VALUES: The Living Traditions of Prince Diponegoro’s Descendants

Muhamad Rizal, Wasino Wasino

Abstract

This study explores how Islamic values and Sufi traditions endure through the collective memory of Prince Diponegoro’s descendants in contemporary Indonesia. Drawing on interpretive hermeneutics and narrative-historical ethnography, it analyses interviews, participant observation, family archives, and historical sources, including Babad Diponegoro. The findings reveal how tawhid, moral conduct, and sincerity are sustained through oral narratives, family traditions, and symbolic practices. These practices preserve Diponegoro’s image as a satriya pinandhita, embodying both spiritual authority and political legitimacy. Sufism emerges not merely as a religious inheritance but as an ethical orientation that connects faith with social responsibility and personal integrity. Rituals such as nyadran and ngabekten provide meaningful settings in which religious teachings and historical memories are renewed across generations. Digital documentation and intergenerational engagement further enable these traditions to adapt to contemporary life. The study highlights the role of family memory in sustaining Sufi ethics, Islamic identity, and spiritual heritage amid social change.
